Morrissey’s name probably isn’t high up on Andy Rourke’s Christmas card list: The former Smiths bassist joined forces with drummer Mike Joyce a decade ago to sue Morrissey and Johnny Marr for unpaid royalties. Needless to say, it was an acrimonious affair, but such trivia pales before the might and dexterity of Rourke’s bass playing, which was always unfairly overshadowed by Marr’s admittedly godlike virtuosity. Rourke has been caught up with various projects since The Smiths’ dissolution 20 years ago, and also keeps busy spinning records at clubs around the world, where he doubtlessly fends off aging groupies and inevitable questions about a Smiths reunion. Austin’s twitchy electro-rockers The Black And White Years should provide an excellent dance floor primer.

AA-S Best Bet – Frightened Rabbit:
Scotland’s latest musical export, the Glaswegian four-piece Frightened Rabbit, descends on the Mohawk with New York City indie rock veterans French Kicks and locals Zykos. Emerging from the same scene that birthed acts such as Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand and Travis, Frightened Rabbit’s most recent release (the group’s second release in a year), “The Midnight Organ Fight,” breaks away from the well-worn musical traditions of that distinguished scene with soulful ballads and melodies.

Fronted by the eccentric and unpredictable Adam “Doseone” Drucker, Oakland, Calif., sixpiece Subtle is treading buzz with third LP ExitingARM (Lex), a platter of electronica, hip-hop, and hints of TV on the Radio. Subtle: Live, expect a quintet, as keyboardist Dax Pierson, who sustained a paralyzing injury in 2005, no longer tours with the group. Locals Vehicular and Lady Pterodactyl lead with Austin’s not-so-normal side. – Chase Hoffberger

AA-S Best Bet – Clinic:
If you’re not current on your indie rock vaccinations, then you should probably consult the Liverpool-based four-piece Clinic for a stout shot of hypnotic rhythms and melodies. For more than 10 years Clinic has been shape-shifting, evolving and slowly honing their trademark shoegaze drone-pop, which shines evident on the group’s fifth and latest LP, “Do It!”
Clinic’s influences take flight on “Do It!” with pepperings of Phil Spector-esque girl-pop, Morricone film scores and even punk rock — lending all the necessary immunities for you to attend tonight’s show and stave off a bad time.

XL Recommended – Cave Singers: For me, these guys were one of the sleeper hits of the 2007 Fun Fun Fun Fest, enigmatic folk-rock from a bunch of guys who weren’t all that into folk held together by Peter Quirk’s casually gorgeous voice. With SXSW buzz act/weirdo jammers Dark Meat and Quiet Hooves.

Now in its third year, Fun Fun Fun Fest has become an oasis in Austin’s festival circuit, a curious amalgam of music that benefits from cooler temperatures, smaller crowds, and a DIY spirit.
