What can you do for $5 a day that benefits bats? This year’s Batfest moves west to the South First Street Bridge and features nearly 30 bands, as well as 150 booths bustling with arts and crafts. Local bats include Dr. Zog, Sounds Under Radio, Carolyn Wonderland, Paula Nelson, the Jolly Garogers, and Kissinger, while those with a taste for dinosaur meat should enjoy Edgar Winter, Mahogany Rush, the Bodeans, and the Supersuckers. – Jim Caligiuri

Power-pop is a bit like porn: slippery to define. For two days, Austin becomes the center of the power-pop universe as the Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival serves up punchy testimonials to the enduring appeal of its namesake genre. The first recognized use of the term came in 1967 when Pete Townshend used it to describe the Who, but Friday’s headliner, Paul Collins, didn’t know this in 1974 when he formed the Nerves with Jack Lee and future Plimsoul Peter Case.
