Power-pop is a bit like porn: slippery to define. For two days, Austin becomes the center of the power-pop universe as the Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival serves up punchy testimonials to the enduring appeal of its namesake genre. The first recognized use of the term came in 1967 when Pete Townshend used it to describe the Who, but Friday’s headliner, Paul Collins, didn’t know this in 1974 when he formed the Nerves with Jack Lee and future Plimsoul Peter Case.

The Meat Purveyors are like a bad love affair. Fueled by too much beer and too many pills, these locals come back perennially to break your heart, and chances are they’ve written a song about it. Though not officially reunited, the brilliantly belligerent punk-grass quartet returns for another romp in the hay hawking new EP Come and Take It. American People join the reunion fervor, along with Gary Newcomb’s exquisite pedal steel. – Doug Freeman
