Australian quartet the Witch Hats no doubt spent many a night studying the Birthday Party’s oeuvre, though they clog up their punk with a little more gunk. Forthcoming debut LP Cellulite Soul finds a perfect home on In the Red Recordings, all distortion, scream, and big, throbbing basslines. The Golden Boys and the Martin Luther Kings bring the local pain. – Audra Schroeder

Riffing with fury as Queensbridge’s destined prophet, a then-20-year-old Nasir Jones spat 1994’s Illmatic across G-Funk’s low-riding six-four, preceding the Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die by four months and bringing hip-hop’s crown back to its Gotham empire. Cold-blooded and precise, Illmatic’s draw stands today as MC mastery: head-banging beats from DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Large Professor cuing hard-bodied rhymes spun with Eminem-influencing complexity. The game immediately belonged to the Little Homey.
