Tennessee-based singer-songwriter James Jackson Toth spins heavy literary tales infused with a melancholy atmospheric drone and an occasional plaintive steel guitar. He says his influences include Tanya Tucker and the Violent Femmes. With the Dutchess and the Duke, and Restaurant.

It gets no more “honky tonk” than James Hand. You hear his voice, you listen to his hard country twang and you can feel the sawdust underfoot. He played for 30 years before recording an album in 1996, “Shadows Where the Magic Was.” Ten years and a few albums later he released the terrific “The Truth Will Set You Free” on Rounder, one of the year’s strongest country albums. Expect a new one later this year and expect to smell the sawdust when you hear him live.
