If anyone needs proof that instrumental post-rock can still kick balls and sound relevant, Gifts From Enola brings it. The young Virginian outfit released its debut full-length, Loyal Eyes Betrayed The Mind, in 2006, and the disc is a dizzying whirlwind of moody guitar drenched in ambience, samples, and echoes. Like From Monument To Masses minus the overt politics, Mogwai with a twinge of metal, or even Pelican at its most melodic, Gifts From Enola knows how to connect the gut, heart, and brain into an unbreakable circuit of melodic magnificence. A split album with You.May.Die.In.The.Desert came out earlier this year. Austin’s Calm Blue Sea opens with alternately whispering and roaring space-rock that’s often as gently New Age as its name suggests. Also playing: Mediums, Maps.

Tha Carter III went platinum in one week, and NOLA’s Lil Wayne earned the stamp from Brooklyn to Compton as hip-hop’s hottest MC, but even Weezy F. Baby knows it’s best to respect your elders. He’ll be splitting the bill with Cash Money CEO Birdman, who’s one badass spitter in his own right, even if the former Big Tymer’s 2007 release, 5 Star Stunna, suggests otherwise. more at austinchronicle.com

You’ve got to hand it to Harry And The Potters: They sure know how to exploit the hormonal imbalance of 12-year-old girls. Cynicism aside, there’s very little to dislike about the Boston duo’s self-described “wizard rock” (although—sorry, guys—Uriah Heep beat you to it). Costumed in scarves and Harry glasses, the group plays chirpy indie rock with obvious titles such as “Save Ginny Weasley From Dean Thomas,” “Hermione’s Birds And Boys,” and “In Which Draco Malfoy Cries Like A Baby.” The Potters are currently headlining a tour dubbed the Unlimited Enthusiasm Expo—tellingly subtitled “Camp Jump And Yell For Boys And Girls And Wizards”—an unabashedly nerdy traveling circus aimed squarely at the sugar-crazed that also features the warp-zone electro-pop of Math The Band and “sock puppet rock band” Uncle Monsterface.
