If Rooney were only “that band featuring Jason Schwartzman’s younger brother”—singer-guitarist Robert Carmine—that would be one thing. But the band can credit the primetime teen soap The O.C. with breaking it big in the U.S. After a few years and a couple of false starts, Rooney returned last year with Calling The World, a continuation of the outfit’s pursuit of radio-ready hooks… from the ’70s and ’80s. Lead single “When Did Your Heart Go Missing?” would make Daryl Hall proud and John Oates call his lawyer. Opener Locksley (not to be confused with Austin’s own Loxsly) specializes in melodic garage-pop that’s a tad over-sweetened, but it’s hard not to get swept up in its gleefully tight live sets. Opening: The Bridges.

A bill of pure musique noir. Cleveland fourpiece This Moment in Black History furiously rocks this nation of assholes with perfectly old-school punk bred in D.C. A local threesome chunks lightbulbs in the trash: Former Clevelanders the Jungle Rockers Cool It Out in black Chuck Taylors, Attack Formation adds black humor to a mishmashable mix, and Camp X-Ray justifies black eyes. more at austinchronicle.com

Last summer, RTX hit the same weekend as the Republic of Texas Biker Rally, and the L.A. sextet’s acid-washed gutter-rock odes to the 1980s couldn’t have been a more appropriate soundtrack. Singer Jennifer Herrema pulling white foxtails out of her purse for no apparent reason: priceless. JJ Got Live RaTX, the follow-up to last year’s Western Xterminator, drops in the fall. Fellow Los Angeleno Imaad Wasif invokes guitar-chug via 1970, touring the extend-o-jams of latest Strange Hexes with his band, Two Part Beast. Locals Abby Birds and the Gospel Truth open. more at austinchronicle.com
