A tall, lanky solo artist who’s been compared to other tall, lanky solo artists like Jens Lekman and Jonathan Richman, Jeremy Jay traffics in sparse, moony-eyed pop that takes its stylistic cues from 1950s rock ’n’ roll and lovelorn French chansons. While the unabashed romanticism and reverb-driven surf guitar lines could be dismissed as retro fad, there’s an eerie, refracted quality to Jay’s music that haunts the listener long after his debut LP, A Place Where We Could Go, stops spinning. The singer conjures up images of ghostly proms and long-gone teen angels with a detached croon that’s both intimate and too ephemeral to touch. There’s a hint of humor in there as well: Check his cover of Suicide’s “Ghost Rider” for proof. Opening: {{{Sunset}}}, Nic Armstrong.

Tapping into the spirit of Neurosis, Arkansas-based quartet Deadbird gets heavier and more expansive with its latest, Twilight Ritual (At a Loss), a simmering pot of doom metal. Lions of Tsavo, easily one of Austin’s most underrated metal acts, blacken the night with math-metal pyrotechnics from their forthcoming Firelung. Bottom-heavy local metallurgists Faithealer meld grindcore with experimental atmospherics, and Mala Suerte screams bloody Sabbath.

Morrissey’s name probably isn’t high up on Andy Rourke’s Christmas card list: The former Smiths bassist joined forces with drummer Mike Joyce a decade ago to sue Morrissey and Johnny Marr for unpaid royalties. Needless to say, it was an acrimonious affair, but such trivia pales before the might and dexterity of Rourke’s bass playing, which was always unfairly overshadowed by Marr’s admittedly godlike virtuosity. Rourke has been caught up with various projects since The Smiths’ dissolution 20 years ago, and also keeps busy spinning records at clubs around the world, where he doubtlessly fends off aging groupies and inevitable questions about a Smiths reunion. Austin’s twitchy electro-rockers The Black And White Years should provide an excellent dance floor primer.
