When drummer Charles Gocher passed away last year, Arizona-bred experimental pioneers Sun City Girls effectively closed up shop in tribute. Now, the remaining members – guitarists Alan and Richard Bishop – are paying tribute under a different name. Also the title of their tour-only disc, the Brothers Unconnected spans more than 20 years of the Sun City Girls’ unwieldy catalog in acoustic form. One of Gocher’s films, The Handsome Stranger, opens the show.

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson

Gonzo is the definitive film biography of Hunter S. Thompson, a mythic American figure and writer whose suicide led Rolling Stone-where Thompson started his career-to devote an entire issue to the man that launched a thousand sips of bourbon, endless snorts of cocaine, and a brash, irreverent, fearless style of journalism dubbed “gonzo” after an anarchic blues riff by James Booker. Director Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room) has Johnny Depp (Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas) lend narration to the film using Thompson’s own words and dips into over 200 hours of private audiotapes, home movies, and documentary footage.

Something’s rustling in the pines of the Northwest. The past few years have given rise to a crop of bands from the Upper Left Coast that owe as much to Appalachian folk ballads as West Coast pop, refashioning mountain minstrelsy as indie fodder. Fleet Foxes emerge as the best.
“I don’t know what it is,” laughs Foxes singer/guitarist Robin Pecknold from Glasgow, the final stop of the Seattle quintet’s sold-out UK tour. “There’s just a bunch of people making music in the Northwest that’s really interesting to me. When you’re in America, you can say that it sounds Northwestern or Southeastern or Appalachian, West Coast or Californian, but over here, they just say it sounds American.”
While Fleet Foxes’ stunning debut LP for Sub Pop wanders across a geographical crossroads, it also bends time, melting a cappella hymns into the classic pop harmonies of the Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills & Nash with the Southern-dripped echo of My Morning Jacket. The rich rural odes, meanwhile, draw more in mood from romantic poets, weaving natural awe with a quiet melancholy. Pecknold admits that maintaining the rural inspiration on tour has proven problematic.
“On the last tour, I didn’t write a single thing at all,” he says. “It was awful. It just felt like two months of creative time lost. But right before we left for this tour, I went with my girlfriend to Mount Hood, and we just stayed in a cabin for a few days. I began, like, eight songs in that time. All we had to do was keep the fire going and play guitar. It was kind of like the perfect day, every day.”
