Fri. 06/27 | 7:00PM @ The Mohawk (Downtown)
Mohawk plays host to one of the most energetic tours currently running, featuring some of the hippest acts around. Entertainment is provided by the electro-pop of Matt & Kim, The Death Set…more»
Curated by Sean Carlson and former Black Flag/Circle Jerks singer Keith Morris, Fuck Yeah Fest makes up for its lack of a centralized theme with a spirited motto. It’s a self-described punk-rock art-walk of sorts, bursting with bands and comedians with no real thematic thread other than cramming in as much cool shit as possible. Debuting his first-ever spoken word set at this show, Morris hosts a touring version headlined by buzzy Brooklynites Matt And Kim. The keys-and-drums duo isn’t as accomplished as kindred spirits Quasi and Mates Of State, but its energy is infectious, and a reputation as the can’t-miss party band of NYC definitely precedes it. Opener The Death Set is a Baltimore act that coughs up neon-colored chunks of bratty electro-punk. Also playing: Team Robespierre, Brother Reade.

Local poster industrialist Jason Austin is 69 shades of maximum Pantone, pop-noir mojo. We’ve got his “Best of Austin” artwork all over our walls to prove it, and he’s got the glorious CMYK stigmata of Speedball-brand silk-screen ink tattooed forever upon the fingertips of his scrawny, sunglassed soul. Unfortunately, he’s also got multiple sclerosis, thus this benefit. The Hickoids, Oklahomos, Lonesome Dave Fisher, and a host of other serigraphically squeegeed benefactees bow down to King Ink and bleed a little around the edges. So should you.

Matt Wertz Special Acoustic Show

It’s fair to criticize Matt Wertz—and many others—for drawing so heavily on Dave Matthews’ songwriting style and jaunty rhythms. What distinguishes Wertz (slightly) in his increasingly bloated niche is that he also takes a cue from Matthews’ jazzy instrumentation. The keys, hand percussion, and bubbling basslines behind his inoffensive burly-to-falsetto voice often make the songs more smooth-jazzy, but at least that does the writing justice. Fans of the very similar Starbucks-approved sounds of John Mayer or Jack Johnson should find plenty to “rock” to here, though this is a special acoustic show for his new album of remixes, Under Summer Sun.

L.A.’s Fuck Yeah Fest has gone mobile, and who better to headline than unnaturally peppy Brooklyn duo Matt & Kim? The drum and synth combo’s 2007 single “Yea Yeah” is still the perfect summer tour anthem, while equally spastic Baltimore punks the Death Set unload dance-floor samples into the mosh pit. Brooklyn’s Team Robespierre and L.A.’s Brother Reade open, with spoken word from Keith Morris, comedy from Nick Flanagan, and much more.
