Bizarre, ghost-obsessed indie-pop outfit The Unicorns came and went like a comet. The trio made a fantastically weird and lush album called Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?, then called it quits just as that record was finding its deserved embrace, adding a strange twist to the question it posed. When members Nicholas Thorburn and Jamie Thompson returned with a setup more typical of their Canadian roots (seven-plus members and almost orchestral arrangements), they calmed the quirk a bit to release 2006's Return To The Sea. Subsequently, Thompson left and Islands has become even more digestible with the new Arm's Way, which takes the remaining Unicorns stardust from the atmosphere and mixes it with strings, slick beats, and synthesizer. Opening: Sebastien Grainger, Crayonsmith. (Islands also plays an in-store at Waterloo Records at 5 p.m.)

This is the prettiest of pretty psych. In their own words, “Heavy with poetry and mood, cinematic backdrops of intelligent musical arrangements. Labored of the love of late night movies that changed your life forever caught alone in one endless summer, with picnics in graveyards, with guitars and tambourines. Fields of red flowers, owls at night, and black and white photographs are comfort spots through our artistic journey”.
