“Love, Janis” opens tonight at the Long Center. The Broadway-style show depicts the life of iconic musician Janis Joplin, beginning with her departure from her hometown of Port Arthur for San Francisco, to auditions and her musical career through her songs and the letters she wrote home to her family. The musical mixes Joplin’s songs and words from her letters and interviews to give the audience a candid view of the rock star. It runs until Sunday. A portion of ticket sales benefits the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians and Equality Texas.

Underground rapper Busdriver has never quite found his niche, which used to be his greatest strength—his cerebral, acrobatic lyricism challenged hip-hop conventions even when he pandered to audiences with appeals to crossover success. Having scored notoriety only among the hipster intelligentsia, however, Busdriver seems to be picking a fight with his most difficult release, 2007’s RoadKillOvercoat, on which he lashes out against “art-school kids” and “yuppie scum.” Despite its acidity, RoadKillOvercoat is a fascinating panoply of styles that sounds like nothing else out there—which means the art-school kids will love it, whether he likes it or not.
