Joan of Arc: Between Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls, and Make Believe, the Kinsellas are kind of like the Coen brothers of Chicago indie rock. In crafting the latest JoA album, Boo Human (Polyvinyl), bandleader Tim Kinsella took a break from the post-punk propulsion of Make Believe and invited a who’s who of Chicago musicians to assemble a loose melody under his dry, apocalyptic musings (“A Tell-Tale Penis” follows “9/11 2”). “Love, Janis” opens tonight at the Long Center. The Broadway-style show depicts the life of iconic musician Janis Joplin, beginning with her departure from her hometown of Port Arthur for San Francisco, to auditions and her musical career through her songs and the letters she wrote home to her family. The musical mixes Joplin’s songs and words from her letters and interviews to give the audience a candid view of the rock star. It runs until Sunday. A portion of ticket sales benefits the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians and Equality Texas.
