Text this event
Mark Mallman jokingly refers to his stage persona as a “snake-oil salesman,” but his passion for music is completely genuine. Not to mention intense—people don’t play for 52 hours straight, as Mallman once did in his hometown of Minneapolis, unless they’re very serious about their fun. Mallman’s 2007 LP, Between The Devil And Middle C, is a fine showcase for his witty and bombastic piano-driven pop, blending “The Bitch Is Back”-era Elton John attitude and Marc Bolan’s glam-rock shimmy—but even those two consummate showmen never dared to play a keyboard solo using the tire of a motor scooter, as Mallman did at a recent New Year’s show.

AA-S Best Bet – ‘Next Big Thing’:
Last month, Kenney Chesney announced his launch of the “Next Big Thing,” a contest offering local, undiscovered country musicians a chance to open for the “She’s Got it All” singer in their hometown. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Chesney broke into the country music scene in 1995 with songs “Fall in Love” and “Grandpa Told Me So.” Now one of the top touring Country musicians, more than thirty of Chesney’s songs have reached Top Ten on the U.S. “Billboard Hot Country Songs” charts.
Tonight four local music acts will compete for an opening gig at Chesney’s May 1st concert. The winner will then go on to compete for a record audition and a spot on the final leg of the “Poets and Pirates’ Tour.”

AA-S Best Bet: With their debut album, “Borrowed Guitars, Broken Strings, & Unwound Hearts,” still in the making, Nathan Singleton and His Sideshow Tragedy are gearing up to spread the word, and their Monday night residency at Ruta Maya is just the ticket. The edgy blues-country rock sound of the group can be attributed in part to Singleton’s intimate lyrics and the band’s Texas roots.
