Pitting local trio Yellow Fever’s psych strum against the firebranded metal of Red River-born the Sword yields a good fight, the former gliding on an infectious EP and 7-inch and the latter emerging from hibernation on November’s split 12-inch with Sweden’s Witchcraft. Inside, Fever’s local support comes via Mutating Meltdown’s menagerie of bass, keys, and beats, plus the sweet pop glow of the Hunnies and Bear Claw’s mellow acoustics, while outside, the Roller lays waste before the Sword. – Doug Freeman

For anyone who grew up near Denton in the mid to late -90s, Transona Five was legendary, a key figure in the space-rock scene that briefly put the city on the national map. While the turn of the millennium saw hipster affections turn away from bands who specialized in blissed-out, ethereal wanderings, music is nothing if not cyclical, and as the crop of young bands who came of age in the ‘90s find themselves rediscovering the pleasures of echo pedals and My Bloody Valentine-inspired swirls, the time is right for Transona to come out of retirement and play among the stars once again. (Sadly, founding member Chris Foley died last year, though the reformed group has soldiered on with new material, some of which can be expected here.) Fort Worth’s The Theater Fire brings antediluvian folk and mariachi instrumentation to its Steinbeckian tales of murder and madness.

In the decades between 1880 and 1900, American Indians underwent significant cultural transformations as a result of European settlers who thrust them into reservations and Euro-American customs. During this period, William J. Lenny and William L. Sawyers opened a photo studio in Purcell, Okla., near the reservations, and photographed American Indians in both their traditional dress and the current fashions of the time.read more at austin360.com

Junior Brown supposedly envisioned his trademark guit-steel in a dream, a plausible origin given that the double-necked hybrid is an ungodly beast combining all that’s razor-sharp and right in the instrumental world. Even more impressive is his wielding of the axe, with blistering honky-tonk fretwork that’s matched his deep country baritone for more than two decades. Locals American Graveyard open with their own high-octane assault on Americana. – Doug Freeman
