These guys probably suspected that nu metal was peaking at the very moment they started and that metalcore — a combination of hardcore punk’s speed with metal’s blocky, complicated riffs — was the next metal subgenre to take flight.read more at austin360.com
soundcheck magazine party: mothfight! / Micah p. hinson / the soldier thread
Sat. 12/01 | 9:30PM @ Emo's (Red River)

The Victoriana-obsessed Mothfight may prefer the crinkle of yellowed newspapers and the whir of nickelodeons, but the band’s sound is undeniably New Millennium. Led by former Octopus Project guitarist Kevin Adickes, the Austin group conmbines synthesizers and found-sound samples with classical instrumentation (including violins, banjos, and musical saws) and barbershop harmonies, creating flickering glitch-gospels that open a temporal wormhole between past, present and future. Opener Micah P. Hinson is a melancholy singer-songwriter whose remarkable Micha P. Hinson And the Opera Circuit is a simarly timeless collection of bittersweet ballads and wistful waltzes. Also playing: The Soldier Thread.

BLUE MAN GROUP – HOW TO BE A MEGASTAR 2.1 Saturday, December 1 More details to come soon!

The performance-art act Blue Man Group occupies a corner of the entertainment world completely its own. The title of itsmost recent CD perfectly sums up the group’s head-scratching amalgam of high and low art: Live At The Venetian—Las Vegas. In recent years, Blue Man Group has grown from an off-Broadway curiosity to a big-scale performance troupe with franchises in four cities and touring stints with Moby. That trip to the top definitely inspired the Group’s new How To Be A Megastar Tour 2.1, which takes audiences through a satirical “workshop” on how to create the perfect rock show—which, as always, revolves around heavily rhythmic music on huge instruments made and played by blue-painted weirdoes. The self-referential work can probably be best summed up in the words of Arrested Development’s Blue Man understudy Tobias Fünke: “I just blue myself.”

World Burns to Death is hardcore in every sense of the word. Early in 2006, five days after being stabbed in the chest outside the Parlor, lead screamer Jack Control checked himself out of the intensive care unit.read more at AustinChronicle.com

With the metrosexual movement on the wane and beards and plaid shirts on the rise, it’s once again safe to take pride in being a man. The free Man Fest (co-presented by indispensable local blog PartyEnds.com an dBirds Barbershop) revels in all things Y-chromosome with arm wrestling competitions, a lumberjack photo booth, old-fashioned shoeshines, a DJ set of fist-pumping “confidence rock” from DJ laser Donkey, dancing by The Confidettes, and a Quien Es Mas Macho?-style competition for those in “full man gear” aided by free Steamworks beer and the manliest alcohol ever squeezed from God’s hairy nipple, Dewar’s Scotch. Local fur flyers Golden Bear close things out with a grizzly set of kitchen-sink pop and toothsome melodies. Put down the depilatory cream, cut off those ladies’ jeans, and grow a pair already.
