Perhaps it’s unfair to pin an entire nation’s hopes and dreams on one man, but if anyone embodies the word “optimism”
these days, it’s Illinois Senator Barack Obama. The title of Obama’s 2006 bestseller The Audacity Of Hope: Thoughts On Reclaiming The American Dream trumpets the big idea of sweeping change—even if the somewhat compromised political positioning within actually calls for a broader, centrist approach to sensitive issues. Nevertheless, he’s young, he’s dynamic, and he’s the anti-Bush, so to modern progressives he’s the closest thing to John F. Kennedy, emblematic of the promise of life in the post-W era—more so than Hillary Clinton, anyway, whose own adeptness at shifting identities and playing political games stands in stark contrast to Obama’s steadfast idealism. (Although, note to Obama: Maybe you should lay off the TV cameos for a bit; dancing on Ellen and turning up on SNL in the same week isn’t really helping your desire to be taken seriously.)
