The animated Budapest ghetto-dwellers in 2004’s The District! cycle through cut-out facial expressions, launch into exuberant hip-hop songs, and live in oddly warped buildings, but Aron Gauder’s film continually pushes the filth and absurdity up front with its giddy sensory wonders. (In one scene, a used condom and some dog shit on the sidewalk provide visual aid for an epiphany.) A group of scrappy kids go back in time to buy some mammoths and beef up the world’s oil reserves, but their scheme quickly fattens up the neighborhood’s rival Ukrainian and Gypsy gangs, making way for one the funniest cataclysms you’re likely to see in a movie this year (through Nov. 22)
