Text this event Architecture In Helsinki might seem at first glance
to be Australia’s answer to Out Hud, but the coed ensemble also draws
bits from The Beta Band and Tom Tom Club. The sound came together on
the group’s rhythmically playful chant-along album In Case We Die, but
it’s doubly rousing onstage. After the release of Die, “creative
differences” led to the sudden departure of members Isobel Knowles and
Tara Shackell, so it’s not surprising that the recent Places Like This
represents a departure for the group. “Feather In A Baseball Cap” and
“Hold Music” have Helsinki architect Cameron Bird channeling Modest
Mouse-style vocals, though nothing on Places matches the catchiness or
immediacy of “Float On.” A Portland band pitched toward
disco-ventilated post-punk and no-wave noise, opener Glass Candy has
banged around the indie underground with a handful of releases for the
Troubleman Unlimited label. The group preens through party-starting
revisionism, lacing dance-y grooves with loose-limbed lurches and
vocals by Ida No, a jaw-dropping frontwoman on par with Debbie Harry
in her prime.

JENS LEKMAN

In a song called “Black Cab,” Swedish songwriter Jens Lekman laments in a low, Stephin Merritt-like croon about his knack for killing parties. In countless others, he draws on bright instrumental accompaniment (strings, bells, etc.) to lean against his voice’s inherent mournfulness. He won’t have any of that to fall back on at this solo show, but fortunately for all his complaints about missing trains and odes to former crushes, Lekman has a keen ear for hooks that keeps things cheery—as happens to glorious ends on his recent album Night Falls Over Kortedala.

A great piece of film criticism, Thom Andersen’s dazzling cinema-essay Los Angeles Plays Itself looks at his native city’s history as a back drop for the movies, and how it jibes, or more often, doesn’t, with reality. Andersen is a professor at Cal Arts, and he deliveres a lecture in light, using a battery of film clips to back up some original and provocative insights, such as his backhanded praise of Dragnet for its dead-on depiction of how ordinary citizens are condescended to by the LAPD elite. Andersen accomplishes something rare: After seeing this documentary, it’s hard to look at moves the same way again.
