The blissfully slacked-out La Snacks would have found good company in the mid-’90s, sandwiched on a Pavement/Archers Of Loaf bill—but even Pavement rarely wrote songs as simultaneously snarky and reverent as “Emo Kind Of Love.” more at austin.decider.com
Perfectly timed for when the yearning for warmer months has reached its apex, San Diego’s The Donkeys make the kind of hazy, setting-sun music that has the power to create a sort of aural endless summer. more at austin.decider.com
Guitar-drums-keyboard trio The Pharmacy might seem at first glance like your typical indie-pop band. But once the Seattle group fully opens its songs, an intoxicating, hallucinatory weirdness pops out: 2008’s full-length Choose Yr Own Adventure is a loose-limbed, drama-infused disc that wallows in hormones, crocodile tears, and random bursts of rain from sunny skies. more at austin.decider.com
Saturday is folksy outside, with Brazos, Frank Smith, and The Lovely Sparrows performing. Meanwhile a more footloose indie celebration takes place inside with School Police, Transmography and Moses and the Burning Bush.
Outside is a weird-pop amalgam of talented bands, including the surrealistic Moth, peppy and muscular Golden Bear, and, now with 100% fewer neon signs, The Laughing. DJ Richard Henry will also be on hand to sling tunes.
Inside, Lucy the Poodle is putting on her own show, with retro specialists The Ugly Beats, Death is not a Joyride, the Kinky Dans La Lune, and Many Birthdays.
Things take a turn for the loud and unruly this evening, featuring stompin’ three piece Tia Carerra, The Strange Attractors, the psychedelic sounds of The Tunnels, and Che Arthur. Droning space-rock fans, you are being paged.
On Thursday, free week again expands to both the inside and outdoor stages, with The Homopolice, Air Traffic Controllers and Dikes of Holland playing indoors. This is sure to be an intense show, especially given The Homopolices’ tendency for abrasive noise and live theatrics. And Air Traffic Controllers, with a line-up featuring Gerard Cosloy and King Coffee, is like a page out of alt-rock history. Outside, you can see the powerpop of Basic, Ripe and the head-turning garage of The Golden Boys.
