A mainstay of after-school programming for a generation of HBO addicts, Summer School is nothing more than a typical ‘80s retread of slacker stereotypes, adolescent humor, and a predictable underdog story. In other words, it’s the perfect summer movie. Mark Harmon (at the peak of his sex-symbol status) stars as the world’s least convincing beach bum forced to teach a class of remedial English students, while sourpuss Kirstie Alley plays hard-to-get to Harmon’s affable, man-child charms. Of course, the real stars here are the kids, who include a big-breasted (naturally) exchange student, a nervous asthmatic, and a doe-eyed surfer, as well as the film’s one creative caveat: Dean Cameron’s horror movie-obsessed “Chainsaw,” who—along with stoner buddy Dave—steals every scene. As pointless as a mimeographed worksheet (only much more fun), Summer School is all about passing the time. www.theonion.com
