DJ Rehka is best known for Basement Bhangra, a monthy dance party event at New York’s Sounds of Brazil venue. Since the event’s launch more than 10 years ago, Rehka has emerged as a one of the pioneers in bringing the Bhangra element across culture divides to become a recognized facet in American pop culture.

What’s Bhangra? Bhangra originates from the Punjab region of Pakistan and India and is lively folk music sound and dance style that is still popular in the region today. During Rehka’s parties in New York, it is common to receive a quick lesson in the dance style before the party gets underway. But the true spirit of the party remains with the diversity of the crowd and the celebration of the cultural variety it attracts

On September 20th, 2008, Rekha brings Basement Bhangra to Austin for a special Dark Star Orchestra afterparty event at Stubbs. But don’t be worried if you don’t have the moves. All that’s needed is an open mind and the ability to move your feet. Rekha will take care of the rest.
