Posted about 1 month ago.Unlike many country singers, Merle Haggard has truly led the tough life he recounts in his music: As any of his serious fans can attest, he grew up dirt-poor and even served a stint in prison before turning his life around. At the peak of his popularity, Haggard courted don’t-tread-on-me populism, and it’s no coincidence that it was Ronald Reagan who ultimately pardoned him for his legal sins. The ‘90s weren’t particularly kind to Haggard, but he’s made a comeback of late thanks to some old friends—in 2005 he and George Jones released Kickin’ Out The Footlights… Again, and last year saw Haggard contributing the only original material (and strongest performance) to Last Of The Breed with Willie Nelson and Ray Price.
