Add your band to this event in support of NOT changing our current sound laws. KEEP AUSTIN LOUD!

The proposed change to our current sound laws include lowering the legal decibel level for how loud music can be at venues and music gatherings. This also includes not giving sound permits to venues located within 100 feet of a residential zone.

This is incredibly likely to affect your bar, your band, etc. Understand that this is where it starts. This is the move that will sooner or later will have a dramatic effect on Austin's independent music culture.

So you ask yourself, "What can I do to help?"

  • Write a respectful letter to City of Austin leaders including Mayor Will Wynn, The City Council, City Manager Toby Futrell, The Austin Music Commission, and Austin Police Dept.
  • Attend any town hall meetings or public forums held to discuss the proposed sound ordinance change (or upcoming changes)
  • Write letters to our local newspapers, radio stations, webzines, and TV news outlets requesting continued support from our local media.
  • Make signs or bumber stickers for "Keep Austin Loud" and share with friends.
  • If you're in a band, dedicate a small section of your flyer for a KeepAustinLoud logo or remind people to KeepAustinLoud in your mailing list emails or bulletin posts.
  • Place the KeepAustinLoud badge on your Do512/MySpace/Facebook pages.
  • Go to shows, support local bands, buy music and goods from local stores, and keep on keeping the Indie spirit of the Austin music scene rockin.

P.S.:
I’ve posted most of the pertinent documents (as well as a copy of my letter to the City protesting the ordinance)on my blog at myspace.

Antagonism is not the answer. If you really want to fight the proposed noise ordinance )i.e. if you want to be successful), then it helps to know exactly what the issues are, where the proposal came from, and especially, who is supporting it and who is against it. Who showed up at the Town Hall Meeting on Nov. 5 and voiced their concerns? How many have emailed the Mayor and the City Council with an intelligent, well-written rebuttal? If your only answer is to say “Move to Round Rock” and hold up a bunch of signs designed to irritate and anger people, then failure will be guaranteed. Instead, try reading the original proposal, find out who made it and why, and learn what simple steps can be taken to stop this in its tracks.

From Blackbird:
“Being that both Trains and outdoor venues are privately owned for profit entities they both have the same legal right to make a profit. Enforcing a noise ordinance on outdoor venues would also require all train tracks be sound proofed or the trains have to pay mass (one per neighborhood or major intersection) noise violation fees for every train passing through town…and if they could do so legally so could the venues…
Food for thought….”
