The high-haired one is sure to include lots from his latest, It’s Not Big It’s Large (Lost Highway), a return to form that romps in all the right spots and turns to old standbys like gospel and bluegrass with aplomb. When you hear Merle Haggard, you might think of a sharp guitar riff and great old country voice. What some might not know is his music almost didn’t happen. After serving time in juvenile detention facilities, it wasn’t until he saw Johnny Cash in concert that he decided to straighten out his life. Most recently, he wrote a song for Hillary Clinton titled “Hillary.” He’s better known, however, for his 42 No. 1 country hits. Tonight he plays the Paramount. more at austin360.com

Guitar Greats for Van Wilks: Austin knows little boundary when it comes to helping those who have given their music so freely over the years. Van Wilks, the guitarist whose muscle and blood pulsed through bands like Fools during the 1970s, recently underwent surgery for prostate cancer and is the worthy recipient this time. King is still a flashy showman and prolific elder statesman who, at age 82, continues to release big studio albums (his last being 2005’s birthday-celebration duets album 80, starring everyone from Van Morrison to Gloria Estefan), not to mention tribute records, live collections, and even a 1996 autobiography.
