The story, ive found of white denim really, begins with parque touch; then; after the departure of byshop massive from which white denim comes. In not attempting to prefess, now I may if I will say that these jobs are reflected in each song of the bands every move. The sirs before mentioned in these modern times are near to themselves and becoming daily in their times at the “free wheel” of disposure. At the brink of it all is the concretality of a format being contributable to outcomings. If not to simplify too; so, I retrace in my unstated, potentially radical view, of the eventual occasion to this at present one may encounter upon; whether enduring or adoring, but presently existing continually.

Where does a band go after it gains a reputation for off-the-rails live shows featuring vomiting, making out, and singer Cole Alexander pissing in his own mouth? If you’re youthful Atlanta garage-rock outfit Black Lips, you let people believe that you still do those things and continue kicking out the jams. The group’s fifth studio album, Good Bad Not Evil, came out last year to plenty of critical acclaim, but it’s still all about the fiery live show, with or without the bodily fluids. No strangers to crowd control either, skuzzy soul-punk locals White Denim continue to build on the buzz of last year’s Let’s Talk About It EP; those who testify in person can pick up the band’s still-unreleased debut LP. Druggy and dust-covered, The Strange Boys ply the sort of nicotine-stained Greenwich Village psych-blues that belies the members’ apple-cheeked youth.

Called Austin’s buzziest band so many times the backlash is due any minute now, garage-punk trio White Denim continues to rack up the accolades, recently earning album-of-the-year honors in UK mag Artrocker (even though its “debut” still isn’t officially out yet). See them now so you can say they sold out later. One of Austin’s other many next big things, Black Before Red has the smooth-rock airs of Phoenix, yet escapes the elevator with bells, whistles, handclaps, and a seductive joie de vivre. Its 2006 debut, Belgrave To Kings Circle, was the perfect summer album for pasty-faced shut-ins, but its intended audience should more readily embrace the group’s breezy indie-rock now that cardigan weather is in full swing. Opener Haunting Oboe Music pours just about everything but its titular instrument into the mix, creating moody music too cinematic to be dismissed as “emo” (yet too melodramatic not to whisper it as an aside). Opening: The Fever Dreams.

If anyone defined the Austin scene in 2007, it was the breakout bookers of Transmission Entertainment, responsible for most of the year’s buzziest shows. (Of course, we’d like to think The Onion had its own little impact as well.) This joint end-of-the-year blowout bash compiles a crash course in the best bands the city has to offer—skuzzy, soulful savants White Denim; poignant indie-rockers Brazos; “ghetto-folk” temptress Pink Nasty—topped off with a midnight set from Austin’s hardest working man in show business, Black Joe Lewis and his swinging Honeybears. Come in your New Year’s finery and get a free portrait made, dance under the artificial snow machine to between-set spins from DJ Yakles, and toast to the dawning of ‘08 with emcee Matt Bearden. It’s been a good year—frankly, you owe us.

Still riding the buzz of 2006 debut The Loon, Minneapolis quartet Tapes ’n Tapes ups the ante with latest Walk It Off (XL), reeling in rambunctious indie rock with help from Mercury Rev’s Dave Fridmann. Local trio White Denim, hot off a European tour, returns with its freewheelin’ blend of neo-psychedelia and soulful garage pop. Grab a copy of the trio’s Fall Tour ’08 LP. – Austin Powell
