MUNFAQ (Model United Nations Frequently Asked Questions.) Who are Model United Nations, and what do they do? Model United Nations are a musical group from Austin, TX. Since 2005, they have been recording music and performing live. The genre of music Model United Nations record and perform could best be categorized as Rock Music Comparable to the Type You Might Expect an Independent Record Label to Release. Because they are not humorless people, Model United Nations often alter the genre tags on their MySpace page to say things like “Chinese Pop” or “Melodramatic Popular Song.” Model United Nations have performed at venues such as Stubb’s, Emo’s, and a bicycle shop right behind Spider House near the University of Texas. They recently opened for the band Golden Bear, and also for a band who once opened for Grizzly Bear (Brazos.) They have performed with plenty of other great local bands such a Clap! Clap!, This Will Destroy You, Whitman, Haunting Oboe Music, the Fever Dreams, and others. What does the band’s name refer to? The term “Model United Nations” refers to a high school extracurricular organization in which students pretend to be countries and debate international issues. For more information on these organizations, see that one episode of the Simpsons where Bart and Lisa are in a Model United Nations club that ends up stranded on a desert island. Aren’t those organizations more commonly referred to as “Model U.N.?” Why don’t you go by Model U.N. instead of Model United Nations? Model United Nations used to go by “the Model U.N.,” and would probably be referred to as “the Model U.N.” by their fans on message boards if they were well known enough to have fans or message boards. Officially, Model United Nations now go by “Model United Nations” and not “the Model U.N.” because they think that “Model United Nations” looks better on paper.* *Editor’s Note: Model United Nations’ vocalist/guitarist Warren Mills is recently of the opinion that maybe the band should go back to being officially referred to as “the Model U.N.” rather than “Model United Nations,” as “the Model U.N.” is easier to remember and, let’s face it, “Model United Nations,” when said or written as a whole, sounds just a wee bit pretentious. Are these the only questions people frequently ask about Model United Nations? No. More will be revealed soon. Soon!
