MegaZilla started as a side project for local musicians Corey Cottrell and Joey Hook, who perform in the rock outfit Grand Canyon. Now their new act is becoming their main attraction. The quirky two-piece features Cottrell, also known for his work with Transponder, playing an eight-string aluminum bass through a series of sampling pedals and tube amps. Hook plays drums and uses electronic triggers on his drum set to create sounds with his laptop. The band’s influences include Juicifer, The Melvins, Harvey Milk and Enemy Mine, but MegaZilla’s dynamic sound ranges from a whisper to a shout, from droning sludge to guitar riffing, and regular beats are mixed with intricate math-rock rhythms. A review from a local music fan at a recent MegaZilla show says it all: "I had organs rattling that I didn’t know existed!" MegaZilla performs Saturday at Eastside Tavern with This Is My Condition, a one-man band from Lawrence, Kan., manned by Craig Comstock, who manages to play guitar and drums at the same time. The two bands also will play together in Lawrence and Austin, Texas.

Named after the violent man-children in cult comedy Slap Shot and claiming to play “puck rock,” the Hanson Brothers probably would never have broken out of the local novelty-band circuit were it not for the fact that it features three members of legendary Canadian band NoMeansNo. more at austin.decider.com
