Last November at Mohawk, the King Khan & BBQ Show managed to rile up a crowd of drunken adults with just two guitars and a kick drum. Khan donned an extremely short, tight dress and blond wig and gave us all an eyeful as he climbed an amp. The former Montrealer/current Berliner is indeed a showman, and now with his ninepiece psych-soul Shrines, he’s gone next level.

“With BBQ we try to make the sound of 10 men with only two and we throw a lot more punk and doo-wop in there,” he explains via e-mail. “I love having the two extremes: a ball-crushing big band and also a very stripped-down sonic boom.”

Vice Records just released The Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines, a compilation of soul-a-delic cuts from the group’s previous LPs and vinyl releases. Fittingly, Khan explains, he met most of the Shrines “in bars,” including veteran percussionist Ron Streeter, who’d toured with Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder. The Berlin-based collective’s retro affection is reflected in the names of the players: Mr. Speedfinger (guitar), Big Fred Rollercoaster (sax), and John Boy Adonis (drums), to name just a few. With Khan as their shaman, live performances overseas have taken on a mythic heat, which is fine with him.

“I think people like Little Richard paved the way for dangerous rock & roll and really put a flame under people’s asses,” remarks Khan. “When I started the Shrines, I wanted to make a real eyegasmic show. I think the rock & roll renaissance is now and I am proud to spread it all over the world. more at austinchronicle.com
