Finally, a rock band to brave the cookie-cutter hipsters and break the mold with loud, power-pop(ish), alternative rock. I understand that the last decade of guitar based music has ruined what these terms presently mean, but Ethan Durelle is like the 90's throwback band all of us thirty-somethings have been dreaming of. Before I lose you, let me clarify that Ethan Durelle (a band, not a lonesome dude) isn't a thumbling tribute band recycling alterna-rock anthems. This is a weighty and substancial modern band making very progressive music, often diving into the world of dark post-punk. But the ultimate beauty of Ethan Durelle's Talks To The Dark record is that when I listen to it, I feel like the vomit inducing 'emo movement' never happened. Bandleader Evan Lecker (guitars and vocals) sounds like a yelping Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) and an angry Doug Lorig (Roadside Monument) mixed together, and the brooding, sometimes chaotic songs on this album are mostly explosive. These songs are messy, low, and thundering...but always focused and concise. Swirling guitars crash into smashing drums and disonant instrumental harmonies. You just don't get to hear new rock records like this much anymore. And the benefit of Ethan Durelle is that every moment is quality, chunked full of passion and post-punk dirty sweat. I am really loving this album. Maybe the suprise of the year? Maybe.
