Over the past decade, the ever-mutating ensemble known as Calexico has evolved from a low-key side project into one of America's most consistently inspired musical entities. The band is anchored by singer/guitarist Joey Burns and drummer/percussionist John Convertino, who first honed their instrumental rapport as the rhythm section of indie stalwarts Giant Sand. Since striking out on their own as Calexico, they've released a remarkably diverse array of music, culminating in the expansive rockist soundscapes of their current album, Garden Ruin. The band is equally unpredictable on stage, where they've ranged from stripped-down duo to their current incarnation as sprawling mini-orchestra.
