The Tunnels (CD Release), Ripe, Teen Sensations, Pictures in Braille (inside) @ Emo's

Husband and wife Carlos Jackson and Rachel Goldstar are songwriting machines. From the space rock of Experimental Aircraft and All in the Golden Afternoon comes the next logical step: the Tunnels’ garage psychedelia, not quite trippy but definitely high. The local fivepiece previews its upcoming debut LP alongside fellow local lovers of the 1960s the Teen Sensations. Quirkier locals Confuzatron and New York alt-rockers Pictures in Braille open. more at austinchronicle.com

harvey milk, megazilla, attack formation, red x red m @ Red 7

The history of Athens, Ga.’s Harvey Milk drops the supply-and-demand theory on its elbow and breaks it in four places. The quartet put out numerous 7-inches and three LPs of heavy, gunky rock during the mid-1990s, never really gained a fan base outside of Georgia, and disbanded in 1998. Then they quietly reunited and put out 2006’s crushing Special Wishes, those hard-to-find 1990s albums were fervently reissued by metal stable Relapse Records, and now Harvey Milk is touring Europe opening for Oxbow. Drummer Kyle Spence doesn’t really get it either.
“None of us ever thought there would be much interest in the band at all, and for it to happen almost 10 years after we stopped playing is surreal,” he says. “We didn’t tour a hell of a lot but almost every single record we put out during the Nineties was a direct result of meeting people at shows. MySpace is great and all, but it’s completely different than meeting someone in person, and I bet a lot of bands these days may not have those opportunities.”
These days, Harvey Milk 2.0 features Spence, singer/guitarist Creston Spiers, guitarist Stephen Tanner, and newest member Joe Preston, formerly of the Melvins, on bass/guitar. “Stephen asked him if he’d be up for playing with us, and he said, ‘Sure.’
“I don’t think he knew what he was getting into.”
Their blistering, Quaalude-speed return to form, Life … the Best Game in Town (Hydra Head), was recorded in Athens, where Spence and Spiers still live. It’s classic Milk: primal, gooey, thudding, but not expired. With this renewed interest in the group, maybe they’ll even get a little extra press when the Harvey Milk biopic, featuring Sean Penn as the openly gay San Francisco politician who was assassinated in 1978, hits screens later this year?
“How can it be bad?” Spence posits. “The guy’s been in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Bad Boys, At Close Range, The Falcon and the Snowman, 21 Grams. I think we’ve all forgotten about Shanghai Surprise.” more at austinchronicle.com

Bo Porter, BettySoo Birthday Bash, Meagan Tubb, Josh Tatum @ Saxon Pub

With a name that sounds like Buddy Holly bestowed it, Betty Soo wooed and won Austin’s heart with last year’s Little Tiny Secrets and Never the Pretty Girl. Soo’s stock-in-trade of girl-with-a-guitar lands her on a crowded bench, but a deft songwriter’s touch lifts her above it with panache. Those CDs garnered well-deserved acclaim for the second-generation Korean who’s found that folk and pop do well with a bit of twang. more at austinchronicle.com

James Hunter w/ Joe Pug @ Antone's

James Hunter’s 2006 Grammy-nominated People Gonna Talk got tongues wagging all right, channeling a 1960s vibe and voice that brought to mind Sam Cooke, but few people knew the UK soul man had been knocking around since the 1980s. Hunter’s new The Hard Way (Go/Hear Music) deepens the groove and widens the sonic palette of its predecessor.
“The only reason [for the breakthrough] was because we found ourselves associated with people who were willing to put some money and some time into promoting us,” offers Hunter. “I think it could have happened earlier if we’d had those breaks. But I’m glad it didn’t, because, looking from here, I don’t think we were terribly good in those days. People said we were, but, comparing my writing, it was in a pretty juvenile stage from where I’m at now.
“I’ve always wanted more soul,” he adds. “I’m writing about people with real experiences rather than pretending to be Muddy Waters. I’ve been singing since 1980, and I’ve never felt that I’ve stopped progressing. My style has changed, but my techniques have improved.”
With the emergence of Amy Winehouse and Duffy, it’d be easy to pigeonhole the 45-year-old singer-songwriter as a product of the new British soul scene – one he claims doesn’t exist.
“When we were struggling, there was hardly a scene at all,” he asserts. “We might have been the only band of our type there. There were no other people doing blues or jump jive. People used to lump us in with that kind of soul thing, and we were never part of any movement at the time. So I don’t know how big that scene is or whether there is one now. We’ve always been a bit of a fish out of water.” more at austinchronicle.com

THE CARTER III WORLD TOUR, with Lil' Wayne and Birdman @ Travis County Expo Center

Tha Carter III went platinum in one week, and NOLA’s Lil Wayne earned the stamp from Brooklyn to Compton as hip-hop’s hottest MC, but even Weezy F. Baby knows it’s best to respect your elders. He’ll be splitting the bill with Cash Money CEO Birdman, who’s one badass spitter in his own right, even if the former Big Tymer’s 2007 release, 5 Star Stunna, suggests otherwise. more at austinchronicle.com

Unlimited Enthusiasm Expo w/ Harry and the Potters, Math the Band & Uncle Monsterface @ The Mohawk

The eight eyes behind Boston indie-punk duo Harry & the Potters bring a traveling summer spectacle for grownup kids called Camp Jump & Yell for Girls, Boys, Young Adults & Wizards. Campers should expect, among other things, dancing sock puppets (courtesy of Uncle Monsterface), adult aerobics (done along to the infectious electro-pop of Rhode Island’s Math the Band), and, of course, songs about being a wizard. more at austinchronicle.com

Sex/Vid, Iron Age, Giuda (Italy), Black Congress (Inside) @ Emo's

This quartet was appropriately blotto by the Saturday of South by Southwest 08, but it only seemed to add to the thrash-punk tantrums. Plus, they’re from the Northwest, so that means an extra-special kind of fucked-upedness. Italian stallions Giuda, plus locals Black Congress and Iron Age, top off this wholly hardcore hesh sesh. more at austinchronicle.com

King Khan and The Shrines, Jacuzzi Boys, Wine and Revolution @ The Mohawk

Last November at Mohawk, the King Khan & BBQ Show managed to rile up a crowd of drunken adults with just two guitars and a kick drum. Khan donned an extremely short, tight dress and blond wig and gave us all an eyeful as he climbed an amp. The former Montrealer/current Berliner is indeed a showman, and now with his ninepiece psych-soul Shrines, he’s gone next level.
“With BBQ we try to make the sound of 10 men with only two and we throw a lot more punk and doo-wop in there,” he explains via e-mail. “I love having the two extremes: a ball-crushing big band and also a very stripped-down sonic boom.”
Vice Records just released The Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines, a compilation of soul-a-delic cuts from the group’s previous LPs and vinyl releases. Fittingly, Khan explains, he met most of the Shrines “in bars,” including veteran percussionist Ron Streeter, who’d toured with Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder. The Berlin-based collective’s retro affection is reflected in the names of the players: Mr. Speedfinger (guitar), Big Fred Rollercoaster (sax), and John Boy Adonis (drums), to name just a few. With Khan as their shaman, live performances overseas have taken on a mythic heat, which is fine with him.
“I think people like Little Richard paved the way for dangerous rock & roll and really put a flame under people’s asses,” remarks Khan. “When I started the Shrines, I wanted to make a real eyegasmic show. I think the rock & roll renaissance is now and I am proud to spread it all over the world. more at austinchronicle.com

Shoegaze Sundays at The Hole w/ The Paper South & Fires Were Shot @ Hole in the Wall

The asphalt’s boiling and all the grass is dead, but we have two reasons to bear another evil summer: the Hole’s Shoegaze Sundays and Red 7’s Free Summer Sundays. This week, the former turns up the reverb with the Paper South and Fires Were Shot, and the latter rocks it Red River-style with the Strange Boys, Diagonals, and Strange Attractors. Two residencies, both local, both free. more at austinchronicle.com

A bill of pure musique noir. Cleveland fourpiece This Moment in Black History furiously rocks this nation of assholes with perfectly old-school punk bred in D.C. RTX (Royal Trux), Imaad Wasif, Two Part Beast, Abby Birds (Inside) @ Emo's

Last summer, RTX hit the same weekend as the Republic of Texas Biker Rally, and the L.A. sextet’s acid-washed gutter-rock odes to the 1980s couldn’t have been a more appropriate soundtrack. Singer Jennifer Herrema pulling white foxtails out of her purse for no apparent reason: priceless. JJ Got Live RaTX, the follow-up to last year’s Western Xterminator, drops in the fall. Fellow Los Angeleno Imaad Wasif invokes guitar-chug via 1970, touring the extend-o-jams of latest Strange Hexes with his band, Two Part Beast.
