When you hear Merle Haggard, you might think of a sharp guitar riff and great old country voice. What some might not know is his music almost didn’t happen. After serving time in juvenile detention facilities, it wasn’t until he saw Johnny Cash in concert that he decided to straighten out his life. Most recently, he wrote a song for Hillary Clinton titled “Hillary.” He’s better known, however, for his 42 No. 1 country hits. Tonight he plays the Paramount. more at austin360.com

Despite hit-or-miss debut Broken Boy Soldiers, Jack White and the Raconteurs stormed Austin City Limits Music Fest 2006 like a seven-nation army, even firing off a cover of Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down).” The supergroup reloads Friday night (Saturday is sold out) with latest Consolers of the Lonely, a dynamic combination of Brendan Benson’s best melodramatic ballads and garage blues. Raleigh, N.C.-based retro-rockers Birds of Avalon fly first. – Austin Powell more at austinchronicle.com

The 30th anniversary of Pecan Street keeps it weird with five stages and 20 locals. Saturday beams with Bill Baird’s Sunset, the Lemurs, Ume, Attack Formation, Daniel Francis Doyle, and more before setting off fireworks (literally) with Grupo Fantasma at 8pm. Sunday sets an ethnic vibe with a Latin stage, St. Edward’s Ballet Folklorico, and Sabaya Belly Dancers, plus a country stage for good measure (the Moonhangers, Texas Sapphires, et al.). See www.oldpecanstreetfestival.com for complete lineups. – Darcie Stevens more at austinchronicle.com

Known to most folks younger than, say, 30, as a name in Kid Rock’s ‘American Bad Ass’ (‘I like AC/DC and ZZ Top … Seger, Limp, Korn, the Stones, David Allan Coe and no show Jones’). Coe remains the most outlaw of the outlaw country generation, what with the hanging out with Pantera dudes and all.

Al Jourgensen is disassembling the Ministry pulpit after more than a quarter-century, but the final tour is going out hellfire-and-brimstone-style. Ministry’s recent (but certainly not last) CD, Cover Up, unleashed trademark vocal menace and punishing beat on “Bang a Gong” and other flashback favorites, a good indicator of what you’ll hear between “N.W.O.” and “Just One Fix.” (Ah, for the days of “Stainless Steel Providers”!)
