When you hear Merle Haggard, you might think of a sharp guitar riff and great old country voice. What some might not know is his music almost didn’t happen. After serving time in juvenile detention facilities, it wasn’t until he saw Johnny Cash in concert that he decided to straighten out his life. Most recently, he wrote a song for Hillary Clinton titled “Hillary.” He’s better known, however, for his 42 No. 1 country hits. Tonight he plays the Paramount. more at austin360.com

It wasn’t that long ago that Rilo Kiley—anchored by guitarists-vocalists Blake Sennett and Jenny Lewis—was the darling of the indie scene. The group’s name connoted an in-the-know cachet for those who could rattle off their favorite tracks from 2004’s More Adventurous. While the band’s fortunes haven’t completely reversed, last year’s Under The Blacklight—Rilo Kiley’s major-label debut—put them in decline. Greeted indifferently (or hostilely) by fans, it found the group expanding into Fleetwood Mac soft-rock territory. Still, Rilo Kiley was expanding its boundaries, and the album is a grower that seems destined to earn more respect over time. As live shows have proven since, the bolder new material is easily the band’s best. Opening: Thao With The Get Down Stay Down.

Even in the precious world of indie rock, it’s possible to be too cutesy, and Mates Of State have been toeing that line for most of their career. But the dewy duo continues to save itself by producing albums that are better than the previous ones, including the new Re-Arrange Us, which puts a few spins on the band’s drums-and-organ format via extra instrumentation from producers Peter Katis, Chris Walla, and Spoon’s Jim Eno. Its 10 catchy songs are so solid that you probably won’t even notice their creators making googly eyes at each other. Headlights hails from Illinois, though sonically—with its gauzy harmonies and swooping guitars—it could be the offspring of Britain’s early-’90s shoegazer movement and the chipper side of the Montreal scene. Also playing: Black Joe Lewis.

The earnest punk stalwarts in Rancid have steered out of the big-scale success they courted in the mid-‘90s. After leading the way for chart-bound punk with 1995’s …And Out Come The Wolves, the group chewed through the pop strings yanked by so many of its peers with a resolutely un-commercial follow-up of rapid-fire aggression more akin to Bad Brains and Minor Threat than The Clash. Rancid’s most recent disc, 2003’s Indestructible, ditched the hookless hardcore for a more manic mix of ska, rockabilly, and even gospel—all roughed up and ground out by a rare punk band that sounds more alive now than it did then. The band returns here backed by new drummer Branden Steineckert (The Used) with a new, still-untitled studio album, its first in nearly five years. Opening: Lower Class Brats, Ill Spent Youth.
