Last year proved to be a prolific one for Del The Funky Homosapien, with a solo album, Eleventh Hour, and a compilation titled Over Time with his Hieroglyphics crew. The collective—which also counts grimy battle-rapper Casual and the sunny, spiritual Pep Love among its core constituents—hasn’t been that active as a whole since 2003’s proper studio disc, Full Circle, but this tour should cement some of the group’s momentum. Opener Blue Scholars’ concerns run broad, and MC Geologic’s rhymes help to revive their urgency, even for people who think they’ve heard enough socially conscious rap lately. The Seattle duo’s second full-length, Bayani, suggests that protest hip-hop might sound best set to the thoughtful tempos of A Tribe Called Quest. Also playing: Knobody, Musab, Tanya Morgan.

Last summer, RTX hit the same weekend as the Republic of Texas Biker Rally, and the L.A. sextet’s acid-washed gutter-rock odes to the 1980s couldn’t have been a more appropriate soundtrack. Morrissey’s name probably isn’t high up on Andy Rourke’s Christmas card list: The former Smiths bassist joined forces with drummer Mike Joyce a decade ago to sue Morrissey and Johnny Marr for unpaid royalties. Needless to say, it was an acrimonious affair, but such trivia pales before the might and dexterity of Rourke’s bass playing, which was always unfairly overshadowed by Marr’s admittedly godlike virtuosity. Rourke has been caught up with various projects since The Smiths’ dissolution 20 years ago, and also keeps busy spinning records at clubs around the world, where he doubtlessly fends off aging groupies and inevitable questions about a Smiths reunion. Austin’s twitchy electro-rockers The Black And White Years should provide an excellent dance floor primer.
